The question I get most often isn't about candles or laundry detergent. It's: why did a physician start a home products brand?
The short answer is that medical training is, at its core, training in mechanistic thinking — understanding how things affect the body at the cellular level, reading evidence with discipline, and making decisions in the presence of incomplete information. Those skills turned out to be more useful in formulating clean home products than almost anything else I could have brought to it.
The longer answer is more specific.
What Medicine Teaches You About Exposure
In medicine, you spend years learning about dose-response relationships — the idea that the effect of a substance on the body depends not just on what it is but on how much, for how long, through what route, and in what physiological context. A compound that is harmless at trace exposure can be harmful at chronic elevated exposure. A compound that clears quickly from a healthy adult's system can accumulate in a developing infant's. Route matters: dermal absorption is different from inhalation is different from ingestion.
I spent time in environmental medicine and toxicology rotations that most physicians skip. I was interested in the mechanisms — how specific chemical exposures produced specific disease presentations. Heavy metal toxicity. Organophosphate poisoning. Occupational lung disease. These aren't abstract categories; they're real pathology with real mechanisms that are well-understood in the literature and largely ignored in popular conversation about household product safety.
When I started looking at the ingredients in ordinary home products through that lens — the candles I was burning, the laundry detergent in our washer, the cleaning products under the sink — the gap between what the research showed and what was on the labels was significant. Not alarming in the sense of "every candle will hurt you." Alarming in the sense that the ingredient transparency needed to make an informed choice largely didn't exist.
The Moment That Made It Personal

Children have higher surface-area-to-body-weight ratios than adults, breathe more air relative to body weight, and have developing neurological and endocrine systems that are more sensitive to certain chemical exposures at doses that wouldn't register as significant in an adult. The pediatric toxicology literature is unambiguous about this. When I'm evaluating the safety of an ingredient, I'm not evaluating it for a 150-pound adult with a fully developed blood-brain barrier. I'm evaluating it for a 30-pound child who spends most of her time in the rooms where I burn candles and use cleaning products.
That reframe changed how I looked at the tradeoffs. It's not that I was living in fear of my household products. It's that once you understand the mechanisms, you can't un-understand them. And once you start reading labels through that lens, you start noticing what isn't disclosed.
What the Formulation Work Actually Looked Like
I didn't approach product formulation the way most indie brands do — starting with aesthetics and working backward to an ingredient list. I started with what I wouldn't use and why, then found ingredients that met those constraints while delivering the performance I wanted.
For candles: no paraffin, no synthetic fragrance with undisclosed phthalate carriers, no oversized wicks that generate soot. Coconut apricot wax base, fragrance ingredients disclosed, wick sizes developed through actual burn testing. I wrote about the wax science in detail here and the candle safety research here.
For laundry and cleaning products: no optical brighteners, no 1,4-dioxane-generating surfactants, no synthetic fragrance without full disclosure, no ingredients that the scientific literature flags for endocrine interference at plausible household exposure levels. The cleaning product formulation required more iteration than the candles — performance against a genuinely clean ingredient list is a harder problem than it sounds.
The physician training was useful at every step. Not because medicine teaches formulation chemistry — it doesn't — but because it teaches you to read primary literature, evaluate study design, understand mechanisms, and make defensible decisions from incomplete data. That's exactly what clean formulation requires.
Why Transparency Is Non-Negotiable
The fragrance exemption — the trade-secret protection that allows "fragrance" to appear on a product label without disclosing the underlying chemical components — is the central transparency failure in the home products industry. The short version: it's a legitimate legal protection that has been applied far beyond its original intent, and it prevents consumers from making informed choices about ingredients that have real inhalation and dermal exposure profiles.
AEMBR discloses fragrance ingredients. That's not a marketing position — it's the minimum standard I'd set for a product I was putting in my own home. I couldn't ask customers to trust a formula I wouldn't show them.
What AEMBR Is
AEMBR is a physician-founded home products brand built on the premise that clean formulation and sophisticated aesthetics aren't in tension. You don't have to choose between a beautiful candle and a candle you understand. You don't have to choose between laundry detergent that actually cleans and detergent without the ingredients you're trying to avoid.
The brand is named for the old Norse and Old English root for "amber" — a material that preserves and clarifies. That felt right for what I was trying to build: products that clarify what's in them, made with ingredients I can defend with the same rigor I'd apply in a clinical setting.
I left full-time clinical medicine because I found a problem I was better positioned to solve outside the exam room than inside it. The tools medicine gave me — mechanistic thinking, evidence literacy, comfort with complexity — turned out to be exactly the tools clean product formulation required.
